President's Message

Central Ohio  Section:

I am excited for the upcoming Crew Stadium tour event with WTS International scheduled for the afternoon of May 11. All ASCE members are invited to this event which will be an in-person, outdoor event. Attendees will be asked to follow COVID protocols. Please sign up soon as we expect this event will fill up quickly. It will be great to be able to have our first in-person event in a year and will be good to see some people that we haven't been able to see in person for so long.

The Younger Members Group (YMG), led by acting President Justin Wilkinson and acting Vice President Andrew Gort, is also exploring in-person events in the summer. The YMG has, like most groups, had to forego in-person events for the last year and is excited to see everyone again. If you are 35 years old or under you are eligible to join the group for their events. In the past events have included an escape room, laser tag, brewery tours, Habitat for Humanity, and many happy hours! YMG is a great opportunity to meet other engineers in the early stages of their career just like you and create a network of engineers that you will have for the rest of your career. The YMG was my first interaction with ASCE after college and through that group I have gotten to know a lot of great people and had a lot of fun along the way! If you are interested in joining the YMG mailing list so you can be informed on all the YMG happenings, you can do so through the "Younger Members" tab on the Central Ohio Section website. I hope all of you that are eligible will sign up!

The Central Ohio ASCE YouTube channel is going strong. You can connect to our YouTube channel on the Central Ohio Section website by clicking the  icon on the homepage. We encourage you to subscribe for access to recordings of past virtual luncheons. If we can get to 100 subscribers, it may offer more opportunities to serve our members through the YouTube platform.

Be on the lookout for the ballot for election of the 2021-2022 Central Ohio Section Board. We appreciate your time, vote, and contribution to shaping the future of the Section.

Thank you and get outside and enjoy some of this great spring weather!

-Patrick

Jon has 16 years of consulting experience in geotechnical, pavement, construction inspection and materials testing.  He serves as the Director of Geotechnical Services for Resource International, managing and conducting subsurface investigations, laboratory testing and soil analysis, groundwater, infiltration testing and construction materials evaluation. He provides shallow and deep foundation recommendations, slope stability analyses, designs of retaining systems, soil nail walls, cofferdam systems, and groundwater dewatering systems. Jon provides design of flexible, rigid and composite pavements and performs pavement evaluations using non-destructive testing methods.  Jon is a registered professional engineer in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

Jon has served ASCE as a student, assisting with the steel bridge competition at ONU, and as a younger member, serving as president of the Central Ohio ASCE Younger Members group.

Jon is married with three children.

1st Vice President

A life-long learner and an avid chess player, when he’s not working you can find him working alongside volunteers for humane causes.

Treasurer

Candidate: Maegan Nunley

Maegan Nunley graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Following graduation, Maegan moved to Texas and worked in both the public and private sectors there. She has over 7 years of experience in the water resources sector with specialization in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling. Her project experience includes drainage impact studies, floodplain revision studies, stormwater master planning, and design of drainage infrastructure, such as detention/retention ponds, storm sewers, channel improvements, stormwater pump stations, and levee improvements. Maegan is a licensed professional engineer in Texas and Ohio.

Maegan was also a member of ASCE in college and has continued membership and involvement throughout her professional career. Prior to moving to Columbus in 2018, Maegan served on the ASCE Houston Branch’s Younger Member Committee for two years and she is currently serving as the Central Ohio Section’s Secretary and Events/Membership Chair.

2nd Vice President

Candidate: Thomas Lyden

Thomas Lyden is a forensic engineering expert for Robson Forensic.  In that position, he provides technical investigations, analysis, reports, and testimony toward the resolution of commercial and personal injury litigation involving the design, construction and maintenance of roadways.

Prior to joining Robson Forensic, Thomas held various positions involving traffic engineering, transportation planning and design, maintenance operations, construction, and project management with the Ohio Department of Transportation and a Columbus area engineering consulting firm.

Thomas has a BSCE from the University of Cincinnati, an MBA from the Ohio State University, and is a registered Professional Engineer in 16 states and a certified Project Management Professional.  Throughout his career he has served in various leadership capacities with the Institute of Transportation Engineers, American Public Works Association, Transportation Research Board, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and the City of Hilliard.  He is currently serving as the Central Ohio Section Secretary.

Secretary

Candidate: Nicholas Mill

Nick Mill is a graduate of the Ohio State University with a BS in Civil Engineering, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio. Nick has 12 years of experience on a wide variety of project types throughout Ohio for municipal, county, and state-level clients. His experience includes construction administration, structural retaining wall and bridge design, water and wastewater treatment as well as collection/distribution, and roadway geometric design. Most recently, Nick took a position in 2018 at EMH&T as part of the Public Works group, which works directly with local municipalities to provide design and management assistance for all aspects of their infrastructure. Much of Nick’s work involves reviewing private development projects, designing storm- and wastewater conveyance systems, water distribution, and roadway reconstruction projects. Nick was involved in ASCE during his time at Ohio State, and was a member and sometime attendee of ASCE events afterward, but found that his time for “extra-curricular activities” dwindled after the birth of his first child in 2015. He was also a member of the Development Board for the Licking County museum “The Works” and was a part of their annual STEM Fest for several years, greatly enjoying the interactions with children of all ages during those events, and judging the annual toothpick bridge competition. Recently, Nick has been looking to get more involved with the Central Ohio engineering community to foster relationships and share expertise, as well as hopefully getting some additional involvement in youth and educational programming.

Member-at-Large

Candidate: H G Bhatt

Manu (H.G.) Bhatt is retired after more than 50 years of work in water and wastewater, solid waste and hazardous waste management, construction administration and quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC). He continues to take occasional consulting assignments in civil engineering and QA/QC.

Manu has two Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering and is a registered professional engineer in Ohio. He is a former president of the Central Ohio Section, ASCE. He has authored more than 20 papers and articles and co-authored 3 books.
