Happy New Year! I hope that everyone enjoyed a relaxing holiday season and is ready to jump head first (or already has) into this new year. We have an exciting upcoming event planned for January. It will be a virtual version of our annual January Dinner Meeting with the Ohio University and Ohio State University ASCE Student Chapters.The student chapters will virtually provide an update on their activities over the last year and some of their plans for the upcoming year. After the student chapter presentations, Miles Hebert of EMH&T will present on the Cannon Drive Roadway and Levee Project near the OSU Wexner Medical Center. The project created a certifed flood levee and realignment of Cannon Drive to open up more developable land for the university. It should be an interesting presentation on an exciting project in Central Ohio. As a reminder, if you aren't able to make it to one of our virtual luncheons a recording is available on our YouTube channel. The  on the homepage. Dinner Meeting

ASCE January Dinner Meeting

WHEN January 21, 2021 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM TICKETS $0.00 ASCE member $10.00 Guest (not an ASCE member) DIRECTIONS Virtual Meeting     The virtual room will open at approximately 5:45 PM. The presentation will begin at 6:00 PM. Deadline for registration is January 20, 2021 at 5:00 pm. Registration is required. Contact asce@centralohioasce.org with any questions.   ABOUT THE PRESENTATION The Ohio State University and Ohio University ASCE Student Chapters will provide an overview of their activies throughout the last year. EMH&T will then present on the Cannon Drive Roadway and Levee Project.  A significant portion of The Ohio State University’s (Ohio State) main campus is impacted by the 100-year and 500-year floodplain of the Olentangy River. The previous earthen embankment constructed along the river’s edge is not sufficient to be recognized as a certified levee. In order to address the flood risk concerns and create a certified flood levee, Ohio State chose to implement a project that included the realignment of Cannon Drive, the enhancement of green space along the Olentangy River, and the creation of approximately 12 acres of developable land to support the university and its medical center.  This presentation will discuss the features of the project and the challenges during the design and construction.  SPEAKERS MILES HEBERT, PE, CFM, LEED GREEN ASSOCIATE — DIRECTOR, WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING — EMH&T Miles is a Registered Professional Engineer and the Director of Water Resources Engineering for EMH&T. Miles is a 1988 graduate of The Ohio State University, with a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering. Miles oversees projects related to watershed planning, ecosystem restoration and flood protection. In this role, he interacts with municipalities, conservancy districts, regulatory agencies and watershed stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions. Miles also assists in the development of capital improvement programs for stormwater management projects to protect public infrastructure and improve water quality. Miles served as a project manager on the Cannon Drive project specific to the development, design and permitting of the integrated flood protection measures.  MARIAH ANDERSON, P.E. — PROJECT ENGINEER, WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING — EMH&T Mariah is a Registered Professional Engineer and a project engineer in the Water Resources Engineering department for EMH&T. Mariah completed both her Bachelor of Science (2014) and Master of Science (2016) degrees in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University. Mariah focuses on the design and modeling of stormwater solutions for developments ranging from small commercial sites to large watershed scale drainage studies to meet regulatory water quality and detention. She has also completed multiple flood studies for development projects to determine the extents of flood prone areas. Mariah served as the primary stormwater modeler on the Cannon Drive project specific to the development and design of detention systems that would meet water quality and detention, as well as flood protection for the University. CPD HOURS A certificate for one (1) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hour will be issued at the conclusion of the program.

Luncheon Recap

For the December meeting, we had a great presentation from the City of Columbus:  Jim Miller, P.E., Design and Construction Section Manager — City of Columbus, Recreation and Parks Department;  Rob Priestas, P.E., Assistant Administrator, Division of Sewerage and Drainage Administrator — City of Columbus, Department of Public Utilities, Division of Sewerage and Drainage; and Tim Huffman, P.E., Section Manager, Distribution Engineering — City of Columbus, Department of Public Utilities, Division of Water. Jim discussed the upcoming projects regarding greenway and blueway development, as well as park improvements and upgrades. Rob provided an overview of the sewerage and drainage division including the current consent order, their upcoming projects that are in the planning process, and their response to the wet weather events over the past year. Tim presented the Division of Water’s capital improvement program including the upgrades to both the supply and the distribution facilities.  It provided  an opportunity for good discussion, and we had almost 100 registrants.
