President's Message

Central Ohio  Section:

The changing leaves, shorter days, and crisper air means that fall is officially upon us and so is the Central Ohio Section’s fall schedule. The October Luncheon was held virtually on October 22. Scott Tourville, Nate Lang, and Sophia Lanza of the City of Westerville presented on the City’s Uptown Improvement Project. The $5 million project revitalized the City’s uptown business district improving walkability and access throughout. Attendees learned about interesting engineering aspects of the project including special bridging to save a legacy tree, the importance of flexibility during construction, and benefit of a robust public engagement plan. These factors, in addition to many others, lead to a successful project for the City and community. Thank you to the City of Westerville for presenting. On Wednesday, November 4 Joe Fox of FX Consulting will be offering a virtual presentation titled Connecting Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites to ASCE’s Infrastructure Report Card and Future World Vision. ASCE describes its Future World Vision (https://www.futureworldvision.org/) as “Infrastructure Reimagined” and the presentation will give attendees a better understanding of what FRP Composites are and how they can be applied to reimagine infrastructure. Our November Luncheon is planned to feature representatives of SMART Columbus to discuss its initiatives and progress toward achieving those goals. The luncheon is scheduled for the noon hour on Thursday, November 19. Look for an invite via email in the coming days.

My hope for everyone is a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving and kickoff to the holiday season. Should you need to reach me or any of the ASCE Central Ohio Board, please do not hesitate to reach out to us through the Contact tab on our website.

NEGOTIATION AND IMPROVISATION – A SURPRISING AND ENGAGING VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE!

November 17, 2020
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Zoom Virtual Meeting

">

There’s a common misconception that the best negotiators are unyielding tough nuts who yell and pound their fists. Great negotiators don’t shout, pressure or demand. They prepare, ask the right questions, and seek a win/win at the table. Whether you’re negotiating for money in a contract, or buying a new car, there are powerful skills and methodologies that can point you toward success.

ImprovEdge will lead an engaging and thought-provoking virtual session that explores negotiation, including how to approach the negotiation table, and how to leverage our strengths. You’ll learn important negotiation tactics, negotiation myths, and the unexpected value of personal style in effective compromise.

This engaging virtual experience will create an opportunity to network with professionals and connect to develop deeper and more authentic negotiation skills. You will walk away with:

  • Tools for how to avoid common gender pitfalls
  • New ways to leverage strengths through collaboration
  • Tips for the best negotiations you’ve ever had, whether you are negotiating for a million-dollar contract or bedtime for a 4-year-old

ASCE members are eligible to register at the SMPS member rate of $25. Please use voucher code “ASCE” at registration to receive the reduced rate.
