Central Ohio Section:
Happy 2020! I hope you all had a great holiday and are looking forward to a prosperous new year.
I want to personally thank all of our sponsors who have chosen to financially support our section in 2020. Your sponsorship supports many of our outreach initiatives for members, non-members, OSU/OU student chapters, and local grade school and high school students. If you are interested, its not too late. You may do so securely online HERE.
On January 16 the OU Student Chapter will host our monthly luncheon (a dinner this month) on campus. I encourage you to consider attending – it is only about an hour drive and it is always refreshing to hear from both the OU and OSU student chapters about their activities for the year. We’ll also get an update on the Capital Improvement Program for the City of Athens.
Thank you, and I wish you the best in the new year and decade!

In less than one minute, 52 years ago, the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia collapsed. The Silver Bridge, a suspension bridge that connected Point Pleasant, West Virginia to Gallipolis, Ohio over the Ohio River, was first made available for traffic in May 1928 and was named for the color of its aluminum paint. At the moment of the collapse, 38 vehicles were on the bridge, 24 fell into the river below, seven fell onto the riverbanks and seven sat atop of the section of the bridge that didn't collapse. 64 persons fell from the bridge and sadly 46 such persons lost their lives. The collapse resulted in the creation of the National Bridge Inspection Standards. On its anniversary community members, state and local officials, and the Society members gathered as ASCE recognized the site as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
In attendance were members of the City of Point Pleasant, including Mayor Brian Billings; Jimmy Wriston, West Virginia Department of Highways Deputy Secretary of Transportation; the Ohio Department of Transportation and civil engineering leaders.

ASCE Central Ohio’s December Luncheon was held Thursday, December 19 at the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant near the John Glenn International Airport. Kelli Pledger and Aaron Grilliot from TranSystems, lead design firm, discussed the consolidated rental car (ConRAC) facility currently under construction at the airport. The ConRAC will be a dedicated four-story facility comprised of a customer service lobby and adjoining ready/return area for all rental car companies, along with on-site provisions for refueling, washing and prepping vehicles. This facility will offer customers modern amenities in a centralized location within airport property. In addition, relocating rental car operations to a dedicated facility will free up approximately 1,400 additional parking spaces within the existing public parking garage, which often operates at parking capacity. These enhancements also provide flexibility for future airport planning of projects including the ongoing relocation of major utilities and construction of a new extended-stay hotel, as well as potential future plans for a new passenger terminal and a multi-level public parking garage. The presentation discussed the design, site, and code requirements of the facility as well as its operation and integration in the masterplan for airport expansion in the future. The ConRAC is set to open in summer 2021. Thank you to the speakers and those who attended.
