President's Report

Peter NarsavageCentral Ohio  Section Members:

It is so true that time flies when you are having fun. Here it is May, and I am close to finishing my term as president of Central Ohio ASCE. I had a great time. Brooks Vogel will be president of the section for next year, but don't worry, I am not going anywhere and will continue as the website editor. If you would like to get involved, a great place to start is attending the June planning meeting, when we meet to brainstorm ideas and plan out our events for the following year. Let us know if you would like to attend.

For our April luncheon, we teamed up with WTS, ASHE, ACEC, and Engineers Club of Columbus for a meeting with Congressman Troy Balderson. It was great to hear about his work on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. I was glad to see so many people attend. And for our May Awards luncheon, we already have quite a few registrations. We will be installing our new officers, giving awards to two deserving engineers, and hearing about the interesting work going on at Buckeye Lake. I hope to see you there.

In March 2015, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued its assessment of Buckeye Lake Dam located 30 miles east of the state capital.  The assessment concluded that interim risk reduction measures (IRRMs) should be implemented immediately and a full rehabilitation of the 4.1-mile-long, +180-year-old dam was required to address seepage concerns, internal erosion episodes, upstream face deterioration, subsidence features, and the presence of houses and associated structures on/in the Class I dam. ODNR concurred in adding that such measures were required to ensure the structure was upgraded so that it met dam safety requirements and reduced risk to public safety.

Innovative rehabilitation design and construction practices coupled with collaboration among ODNR, the design team, the construction manager at risk, and many others resulted in the completion of the largest capital improvement project in ODNR history 2 years ahead of the anticipated schedule and  approximately $40 million under the State’s initial project cost estimate.

The success of the project was only possible through the combined, coordinated effort of many different parties throughout the process.  This presentation highlights several of these groups and their involvement in making this project a success.  Specifically, representatives from ODNR, Gannett Fleming, Korda/Nemeth, and Hicks Partners will provide an overview of the history of Buckeye Lake Dam, the construction manager at risk methodology utilized, the IRRM and final rehabilitation design, surveying requirements and methods, and public engagement activities related to the project.

Outing Recap

Laser Tag 2.0 was hosted at Laser Kraze in Lewis Center and we consider it a success. Gaming consisted of two sessions, broken down into 15 minute increments. Blue team solidly won the first round, but the come back kids on the red team totally dominated the blue team in the second round. Needless to say, the rivalry continues.
