Purpose and Background

Bioretention facilities, or rain gardens, are one of the most widely used Low Impact Development (LID) tools nationwide. Monitoring and research studies have proven bioretention to be effective for mitigating hydrologic impacts (peak flows and volumes) and removing stormwater pollutants. Bioretention is an economical method of incorporating multi-functional stormwater management into private and public projects. It is also a popular method of obtaining LEED points for Green Building certification.

Participants in this webinar will learn the benefits of bioretention and rain gardens and receive insight into sizing bioretention facilities. This webinar covers standardized soil mixes and design details and modifications for regional conditions (i.e., cold weather, arid/semi-arid climates, high rainfall, clay soils). Publicly available LID manuals with outstanding design details and criteria are recommended. Vegetation, coordination with landscape architects, and general maintenance requirements are included.
