About the Presentation

When performing mapping projects, surveyors are dependent on the paint marks or flags placed by utility locating contractors retained by facility owners or sub consultants they have contracted. The markings represent the potential horizontal location of subsurface utilities based on a variety of locating methodology that may or may not be accurate. Their knowledge on how these marks get on the ground, the theory behind the functionality of the locating equipment, and the facility knowledge of the person placing the marks is limited and often ambiguous.  In this session, we will discuss the equipment used in locating subsurface utilities, different purposes for One Call and Subsurface Utility Engineering locations, the basic theory behind Electromagnetic and Ground Penetrating Radar equipment, and the limitations of each. We will explore managing the inherent risk associated with mapping and locating the subsurface (and unseen) utilities. Including discussion on, the importance of educating clients and shaping their expectations on risk and liability management to lead to an overall positive project outcome.
