About the Presentation

The Ohio University and Ohio State University ASCE Student Chapters will give us a brief presentation on their activities.

The Engineers Without Borders presentation will cover an overview of the structural analysis and design of a school building in Guatemala for EWB.  Some of the challenges include a highly seismically active region, poor soils, a non-US standard for design, and analysis and design for future expansion.  The building uses a combination of confined masonry and reinforced concrete moment frames.  Current US standards do not cover confined masonry, which for design required a synthesis of ACI, AISI, NICEE, Eurocode, local Guatemalan, and ASCE codes.  The future 2nd floor required the building to be designed both with flexible diaphragms in the initial condition, and rigid diaphragms in the future condition.

Amanda Engle — President, Engineers Without Borders USA, Central Ohio Professional Chapter

Along with the commitment and assistance of many individuals, she started the Central Ohio Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders in 2007. In 2012, Amanda led the Chapter during the design and construction of a road connecting a marginalized community in El Salvador to the main town. She is currently serving as president of the Central Ohio Professional Chapter of EWB and also as project chair for the school project in Guatemala.
