LOCATION: Mozart's Cafe, 4784 N High St, Columbus, OH 43214

TOPIC: Risk Assessment in Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical engineering has seen a rapid growth of interest in risk assessment methodologies. This seems a logical evolution, since soils and rocks are among the most variable of all engineering materials, and geotechnical engineers must often make do with materials they are dealt with at any particular site. A probabilistic analysis may lead to a “probability of failure”, as opposed to the traditional “factor of safety”, representing a fundamental shift in the way engineers need to think about the suitability of their designs. The seminar will review some of the benefits and potential pitfalls of these different approaches, and describe some introductory methods of probabilistic analysis.

SPEAKER: D.V. Griffiths, PhD, DSc, D.GE, CEng, FICE, PE, F.ASCE - Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado

Vaughan Griffiths is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He has written over 300 research papers, including some of the most highly cited in the geotechnical engineering research literature. He is the co-author of three textbooks on finite elements, risk assessment and numerical methods that have gone into multiple editions including the Chinese language. He gives regular short-courses for practitioners on risk and finite element applications in geotechnical engineering both in the US and overseas, with courses recently given in USA, Canada, Australia, Colombia and Norway. In 2018, further courses will be given in New Zealand.  Dr. Griffiths is a former ASCE Director and recently Chaired the ASCE/G-I Specialty conference Geo-Risk 2017 in Denver. He is currently an Editor of Computers and Geotechnics, on the Advisory Panel of Géotechnique and was formerly an editor of the ASCE J Geotech Geoenv. He was the recent recipient of the 2017 H. Bolton Seed Medal at the Geotechnical Frontiers conference in Orlando and was selected for the Cross-Canada Lecture Tour in the Spring of 2017 by the Canadian Geotechnical Society.

Thank you to everyone who came out for the 5th Annual Central Ohio STEM Expo held March 3, 2018 at Thomas Worthington High School. The approximately 500 attendees were able to participate in nearly 40 fun and interactive activities and exhibits in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields. Participants made cars from food and raced them, battled robots, saw concrete float, built towers out of spaghetti, saw a real human brain, and participated in many more enriching and intriguing activities.

We look forward to another great Expo next year. Please check back in early 2019!

The STEM Expo is thanks to the efforts of many ASCE members and without them there would not be a STEM Expo each year. Thank you to the following volunteers for donating their time to help make the Expo a success.

Legislative Update

On March 114th, 210 ASCE members from  49 states, DC and Puerto Rico arrived on Capitol Hill to advocate for infrastructure and the civil engineering community during nearly 270 meetings with Senators and Representatives. While infrastructure has been a publicized topic recently in Washington, D.C. with the unveiling of President Trump's Infrastructure Plan as well as a plan from Senate Democrats, ASCE members added their voices to the conversation by making in-person meetings with members of Congress to share ASCE's views. Five members from Ohio visited the offices of Senators Brown and Portman as well as six representatives.

Topics included:

  • Sharing ASCE's thoughts on an infrastructure plan. While introduction of a plan starts to identify solutions to improve infrastructure and momentum is increasing, there are many improvents that should be made as a bipartisan legislation package is developed. Particularly, funding the program and fixing the Highway Trust Fund is not included.
  • Reauthorization of the 2018 WRDA bill to maintain a 2-year cycle.
  • FAA reauthorization, which has been operating under extension since 2015. Also, increasing the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and increasing the cap on the Passenger Facilities Charge (PFC)
  • Co-sponsor the SRF WIN Actto provide additional funding for state revolving funds toward water and wastewater infrastructure.

ASCE, in conjunction with otehr organizations, is running a targeted advertising campaign targeted at federal lawmakers urging them to pass major infrastructure legislation.

UESI Events

As a result of professional relocations, we are seeking volunteers to lead the further development of our recently created Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) Chapter. The UESI chapter often coordinates local events with the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio (PLSO) Central Ohio Chapter. Thus far we have had several successful events, and chapter development is also in the works in other Ohio ASCE sections. Please contact us at if you or someone you know may be interested.

Dream Big!

The acclaimed giant-screen documentary Dream Big: Engineering Our World has inspired and delighted audiences in museums around the world.

Now, ASCE with generous support from the United Engineering Foundation (UEF) has set an ambitious goal: to put a copy of the Dream Big film and educational toolkit in every public school in America.

To reach every school, we need your help!

Give $5 to send the school of your choice a toolkit containing:

  1. A DVD of the full-length feature film in English, French, Spanish and closed captioned, licensed for educational screenings only
  2. The complete teacher’s guide
  3. All companion videos
  4. Downloadable files for classroom use

Use the search box at the top the webpage to locate a public school.

If you cannot find the school you are looking for, it may have already been chosen as a recipient by someone else. Please consider making a contribution to a general fund for schools still in need.
