President's Report

Central Ohio Section Members:

In my opinion, one of the most beneficial services that ASCE Central Ohio provides to its members is sponsoring free continuing education webinars.  The complete list of upcoming webinars is available on ASCE National’s website, and if your company is interested in hosting one, we will pay for the registration provided you open it up to any interested Central Ohio ASCE section members.  Please consider taking advantage of this great opportunity!

Our December luncheon will include a site tour of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum currently under construction in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Our January meeting will be a dinner hosted by the Ohio University student chapter, and I’m pleased to announce that ASCE National President-Elect Robin Kemper has agreed to join us for the March 2018 meeting!

Please contact me if you have any suggestions for meeting topics, social events for our members, or ways to make ASCE Central Ohio more beneficial to our members. I sincerely hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday season!

UESI Events

The newly formed UESI Chapter of Central Ohio has successfully organized two events, including a lunch presentation by the National UESI President Jim Anspach. We really appreciate Mr. Anspach’s visit to Columbus. In his talk, Jim informed the Central Ohio Section UESI members and guests about the overall mission and vision of UESI in addition to providing case studies on surveying and “as-builting” underground infrastructure projects.

The second event was the Logan Clay Products facility tour, which included a “hands-on” demo of a clay pipe fitting production as well as a technical presentation by Steve Matheny, PE, of Logan Clay Products Company. Photo is conducting a pressure test.

Save the Date

In the spring of 2018, the Ohio University ASCE Student Chapter will be hosting the 2018 Ohio Valley Student Conference (OVSC). The Chapter will be seeking sponsorships for the event as well as individuals interesting in volunteering as judges and for other opportunities. Additional information will be coming soon.

Ohio Infrastructure Report Card

The Ohio ASCE Council of Local Sections has identified a core group of volunteers to begin updating the Ohio Infrastructure Report Card, which was initially published in 2009. The goal is to release an updated report in December of 2018, just ahead of the mid-term elections in 2019. To capitalize on the timing of that release, the Ohio Council is seeking subject matter expert volunteers who would be willing to lead or assist in the development of each category to research, author, review, and edit the these sections.  Letter grades are established across 11 categories, not only indicating the current status but also summarizing the needs to bring each category to a respectable level. This report serves as an important publicity and advocacy tool to inform state and local legislators, as well as the public, on the historically poor condition of our infrastructure. In the 2009 version, Ohio's composite letter grade was a "C-". View the 2009 report HERE. If you are willing to volunteer your time and expertise to bring needed attention to our state's infrastructure needs, please contact Mark.Seidelmann@stantec.com. Any level of commitment is appreciated.
