About the Presentation

OSU/OU Student Chapter reports

Representatives from The Ohio State University and Ohio University ASCE Student Chapters will provide a brief report on their chapter activities, team competitions, and the upcoming Ohio Valley Student Conference.

A School for Las Victorias, Guatemala

Nestled in the mountains of north-central Guatemala is a struggling Mayan village known as Las Victorias. The families there are working to build a new school to lift their children and future generations out of poverty. More than 200 children live within a 1-mile radius of the community center but fewer than half those children are currently able to attend school.

The people of Las Victorias met, organized and defined their modest hopes for a school building: adequate classroom space, restrooms, kitchen, storage space, administrative office and playground. ?The community needed design and engineering help, construction advice and funding support. They turned to Engineers Without Borders-USA. The Central Ohio Professional Chapter embraced the opportunity and is working on the project with student members of the Ohio State University Chapter.

Join us to learn about the engineering challenges faced, the progress made to date, and the plans for construction to help the children of Las Victorias and their families!
