Purpose and Background

Detention ponds are extremely common in storm sewer systems. One function of detention ponds is to reduce the peak inflow by providing storage and limiting the outflow from the pond. Outflow is limited by use of a variety of different types of structures, including weirs, orifices and culverts. Appropriate hydraulic analysis of these structures is not completed using just the simple weir and orifice equations, or a simple culvert analysis. Impacts of multiple openings must be considered, along with the impact of downstream facilities. This webinar covers not only the basics of weir and orifice flow, but also how multiple openings impact each other. The webinar also discusses the calculations for submerged orifices, submerged weirs, and how pipes downstream from the structures can also create restrictions. It presents example calculations, along with methods to incorporate appropriate analysis into software analysis for detention ponds.

Primary Topics of Discussion

  • Basics of orifices and weirs
  • Submerged orifices
  • Submerged weirs
  • Impacts of multiple openings
  • Impacts of downstream pipes and structures

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss the basic equations for weirs and orifices
  • Learn how multiple structures impact each other
  • Understand the impacts of submergence on weirs and orifices
  • Recognize how the discharge pipe from a structure can submerge other control features

Webinar Benefits

  • See how orifices and weirs can be used to control flow through pond structures
  • Examine the impacts of submerged orifices and weirs
  • Learn how multiple orifices can impact each other
  • Discover how orifices and weirs used in combination can impact each other
  • Understand how pipes that discharge from structures can impact flow through the weirs and orifices

Webinar Outline

  • Basics of orifice flow, including multiple orifices
  • Basics of weir flow
  • Submerged orifices
  • Submerged weirs
  • Orifices and weirs in combination
  • Impacts of downstream pipes

The Central Ohio Section of ASCE sponsors free continuing education webinars as a service to our members. These webinars are produced by ASCE and normally cost $250 or $300 for ASCE members. However, the Central Ohio Section is paying the registration fee and inviting any interested section members to attend for free. Just RSVP by the deadline. Seating is limited, so do not delay.

You can see the complete list of webinars available from ASCE National on their website. If you see one you like, let us know. If you and your company would like to host one, let us know that too. If you open it up to any interested Central Ohio ASCE section members to come, we will pay the registration fee.
